Beautiful places in and around Italy?
Madhu Satyamurthy asked:
Hi,
I am in Milan, Italy on business trip. I have seen Venice, Pisa-Florence and Lago Maggiore lake. I plan to see Rome as well.
But, apart from these, do you suggest any must see places in Italy. As I am from India, I would like to see something which is famous and probably I have read in my History or Geography classes. Do let me know.
Also, I am also exploring options to visit neighbouring countries like France and Switz. Do let me know nearest places from Milan to other countries also.
I am looking at cost effective and places which can be covered in 1 day and maximum 2 days in the week end.
Thank you for all those who are guiding with all my previous questions.
Rgds,
SM

Since you have seen Florence and Rome and the Lakes I’d recommend a trip to Pompeii. A quick train ride from Milan to Naples a short trip to Pompeii and spend the day in the ruins. It is well worth the trip. There is nothing like it anywhere in the world.
Go to liguria, a seaside area in the north of Italy (Portofino, Cinque Terre, Camogli, Portovenere).
or you can see the medieval towns in Tuscany like SanGimignano, Siena, Volterra
you can visit the Como lake and then take a boat to Locarno, Switzerland.
If you want to travel to france and don’t want to go too far from Milan I suggest visiting la Cote d’Azur and the wonderful walled town of Carcassonne
You absolutely MUST see the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento extending all the way down to Naples and Capri. Positano is one of the better-known towns along the coast, but each town is charming - and the lesser-known ones are not as expensive. Stay someone like Praiano, Maiori, or Minori for a fraction of the cost but you’ll be within minutes of the larger towns. From Naples or Sorrento it is an easy trip to Pompeii.
